Course Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):
Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
Methodology
Most of your time will be spent reading and practicing programming through exercises, and writing programs to solve problems as part of assignments and quizzes. By the end of the class, I expect that you will be able to solve common data processing problems using programming with more confidence.
Weekly Effort
My assumption is that everyone who is motivated and adequately prepared can succeed in this class. We will NOT be meeting face-to-face, but it does take time to do the readings, exercises, quizzes and complete the homework assignments. The amount of time needed varies widely between students and topics. How much is this? One guideline is 3 - 4 hours/week outside of class for every hour in class. CS110A meets 4 hours per week so, in order to have a good chance for success, I suggest you plan for spending 12 per week for this class.
FOR COMPRESSED SHORT-TERM CLASS WE TEACH THE 17 WEEK course in 8 WEEKS so plan on approximatley 24 hours/week for CS110A
Accounts
Each student in the class will get two CCSF computer accounts. One will be on a web server running Canvas. Canvas is a special online course management software. It is where you will find course content, homework assignments, quizzes/tests, and grades. The other account will be a Unix account on the CCSF student server (hills.ccsf.edu). This is where you will be able to practice Unix/Linuskills.
Assignments will be submitted directly to the class website using the Canvas Assignments Tool.
Grading
This is a skill-building class, so your grade will be based on your completed homework assignments, your test/quiz results and on class participation (using the online Discussions Forums). There will be regularly scheduled for-credit assignments, for-credit quzzes/tests, and for-credit discussions required. These are posted on the Canvas class page and you submit them using Canvas. Some extra credit work will be provided. In addition to several online quizzes/tests there is a comprehensive mandatory final exam .
Standard Grading is Used:
A: 100-90% B: 89-80% C:79-70% D: 69-60% F:Below 60%
All Assignment Deadlines will be on Canvas.
In addtion, within the REQUIRED online zyBook there are for-credit exercises that include variety of hands-on activities.
All assignments are due NO LATER than 11:55pm on the due date.
Late Homework Assignments & Tests/Quizzes
All homework assignments are due no later than 11:55pm on due date (see the Canvas Calendar or Syllabus for all due dates). If you cannot finish a homework assignment on time you can turn it in up to - but no later than - one week late, but it will be penalized 10%.
Tests/Quizzes cannot be made up. There are no make-up tests/quizzes.
Deadlines will be extended if we have a problem on the CCSF network that prevents you from doing the work. This does not include problems with your home computers.
Attendance
You must login to the course (ccsf.instructure.com) AND post to the Introduce Yourself Discussions forum by the end of the first week or you will be dropped from the class as a 'no show'. You are required to participate in the course by participating in discussion forum postings, submitting assignments, and taking tests/quizzes. In accordance with City College rules, if you miss the equivalent of two weeks of class, or do not academically participate, you may be dropped for non-participation.
Note: If you decide to drop the course, it is your responsibility to do so by the deadlines. Please do not depend on me to drop you.
Communication/Where to get help?
Post all questions in the forums. There is a forum for each course module. You can come to my office hours if you want to talk with me face-to-face. I check the Discussions forums once a day Monday thru Friday. Remember: If you have a question about the course someone else probably has that same question and will benefit when you post it to the Discussions forums. Use the class Discussions for any questions that you would ask in class. You are also invited, encouraged and required to post answers to other students' questions. You could also post any resources that you want to share with the group. When you post to the class discussions, please use appropriate "Netiquette ". Online instructors are asked to wait a few days before responding to student questions, in order to give other students time enough to have a chance to answer and give their response the other student questions.
If I am absent for a period of more than three working days, expect an announcement with special instructions.
Plagiarism
It is difficult to determine who has really done an assignment or taken an exam. Mostly I rely on your honesty and integrity, and that you are taking this class in order to improve your own skills. However, if you are tempted to copy someone else’s work, remember that when you copy someone’s assignment you also usually copy their mistakes. If I find plagiarism, then everyone with the same submission will receive no credit for that assignment. If you really want to help a friend with an assignment, then help them learn how to figure it out, instead of giving them the answers or letting them copy your work.
Student conduct must conform to College rules and regulations as outlined in CCSF Catalog under 'Student Code of Conduct'. For more information:
