Please consult the instructions for Homework 5 in your packet. This is an example to help you visualize what your completed homework will look like, but read your assignment carefully, it is for fetching materials from a closed stack area, not for seating students in a workshop!

Analyzing a library task.

The task is seating students for a library workshop where some students have signed up in advance, and some just show up hoping for space. Here are the basic goals.
  1. Students who have signed up in advance will be seated first.
  2. A standby list is created for students who didn't reserve a place.
  3. Empty seats should not be filled by standby students just before the workshop starts -- the librarian teaching the workshop decides when to start seating the standbys.
Part I. Writing the rules for the students.

Write out the two or three rules that you want to post for the patrons. These should be polite but brief!
  1. Signing up for a workshop in advance guarantees you a seat, if you come on time.
  2. Students who are late to a workshop may not be able to attend it.
  3. If you have not signed up in advance, please put your name on the standby list and then wait for the library technician to seat you.
Part II. Writing a procedure for the technicians.

Write down a detailed step-by-step procedure for what the technicians should do for this task.
  1. 15 minutes before the workshop is scheduled to start, get the workshop signup sheet and go to the workshop room door.
  2. Announce the procedure to any students who are waiting to get into the workshop.
  3. While you are waiting for the previous workshop to finish, ask any student who did is not on the advance sign-up list to put their names on the standby list -- in the order in which they are lined up at the door.
  4. When the previous workshop finishes, and all the students have exited the room, invite the students who signed up in advance to take seats, asking them their names and marking them off as they come into the room.
  5. When the librarian teaching the workshop says it's time, make sure all the students who signed up in advance have been seated, and then count the number of empty seats.
  6. Fill the empty seats with students from the standby list.
  7. If there are not enough seats for all the standby students, direct them to the Reference Desk for assistance.
Part II. Writing a procedure for the technicians.
