Homework Assignment 1
for
LIBR 51: Introduction to the Use of Libraries
Karen Saginor

This assignment is due at the beginning of the SECOND meeting of the course.

Examining Print Dictionaries

Please look carefully at each of two print dictionaries (not on the web.) In each dictionary look up the word derivation. Pick two additional words to look up, and look up both words in each dictionary. For each dictionary write identifying information and evaluate its accessibility and presentation. Then write a brief recommendation.
  1. Please write down identifying information for each dictionary. Get this information from the title page. If it is not on the front of the title page, then look at the back of the title page.

    • The exact title.

    • The edition (such as 3rd ed.)

    • The name of the publisher.

    • The city in which the publisher is located.

    • The year it was published, or the year in which it was copyrighted. (If several years are given, use the last.)

  2. Read the following descriptions for two criteria for evaluation. Write an evaluation using these criteria. You may also use additional criteria to evaluate the dictionary.

    • Accessibility: Is it easy to find this item? Is it available at your library? Can you check it out if you want to take it with you? Is it small and easy to carry? If your eyesight isn't good, can you still use this source easily?

    • Presentation: Is the layout attractive? Is it easy to look at? Is the text font easy to read? Are colors used to help focus on important aspects of the material? Are there illustrations? Are there advertisements?

  3. Write a recommendation.

    • Would you want to use this dictionary?

    • When or where would you use it?

    • When would you need the kinds of words that it contains?

    • What is this dictionary not good for?
